PD "Mahnjača 1358" Željezno Polje built an adventure park without concrete or tree felling
Grantee:Mountaineering Society "Mahnjača 1358" Željezno Polje
Who stands behind the project - a modest association, years of work
The "Mahnjača 1358" Mountaineering Society of Željezno Polje is a small but dedicated association from Žepče - with modest resources but with a clear focus: developing mountaineering and tourism infrastructure on Mount Mahnjača in the area of Željezno Polje. The number 1358 in the name is the peak's elevation in metres - a feature that has become part of the association's identity.
What was built - an ecological adventure park
This project should not be confused with classical adrenaline parks where the entire infrastructure is built from scratch. On the contrary, Mahnjača was conceived as the "greenest" adrenaline park that could be built in this part of BiH.
What was NOT built:
- No concrete structures
- No tree felling
- No ground disturbance
- No classic "construction works"
What was built:
- Wooden platforms placed on existing trees
- Wooden wedges and pads - to avoid damaging the bark
- Wooden bridges and obstacles between trees
- Zip line with cables stretched between existing trees
The point: any stone or concrete park leaves a trace in nature for decades. Mahnjača was designed so that - if everything were removed tomorrow, the mountain would remain untouched.
Why this matters - children's health and development
The application had one detail that sets this project apart from other adrenaline parks: being in nature has a positive effect in the health and psychological segment on all people, and especially on children, as well as on children with special needs, so that their psycho-physical abilities and motor skills develop in a healthy environment.
Children with special needs were explicitly listed as a target group - which is rare in applications of this kind. Adrenaline parks usually target physically able visitors, while "Mahnjača 1358" was conceived so that the content is adapted for different abilities.
Implementation model - volunteer work and local knowledge
PD "Mahnjača 1358" did not hire an external company to build the park. The project was carried out through volunteer work and local knowledge of the members of the mountaineering society itself. The advantages of this approach:
- Lower costs - no external labour was paid
- Local responsibility - those who built the park are also those who maintain it
- Member involvement - the park is literally "their project", not some abstract investment
- Knowledge of the terrain - PD members know every path, every tree, every micro-location of Mahnjača
Readiness - done before the works began
- Preparatory clearing of the plateau for the adventure park - carried out before the application
- Consent of JP ŠPD ZDK (Forestry Enterprise of the Zenica-Doboj Canton) - obtained
Obtaining the consent of the Forestry Enterprise is a key administrative step for any intervention in the forest - and the fact that "Mahnjača 1358" had secured it speaks to the seriousness of the preparation.
Target audience
- Day-trippers to Mount Mahnjača
- Athletes (adrenaline, recreational)
- Families with children - especially school-aged children
- Children with special needs - as an explicit target segment
- Mountaineers seeking additional content alongside classic hiking
- Tourists from ZDK and wider - as attractions of this kind do not exist in the immediate vicinity
Sustainability - why this lasts
Sustainability is built into the very design of the project:
- Low maintenance costs - wooden platforms are replaced periodically, but the complete park does not require expensive infrastructure
- Volunteer work of the membership - years of PD's work show that the organisation has continuity
- ŠPD cooperation - long-term institutional legitimacy
- Natural ambience - Mount Mahnjača and the surrounding nature are lasting values
- A target group that is constantly growing - adrenaline sports are growing, family tourism is growing
The message of the project
In BiH there is a lot of talk about green, ecological, sustainable projects - and few that are actually carried out on those principles. PD "Mahnjača 1358" Željezno Polje showed that an adrenaline attraction can be created entirely without compromising nature - all of wood, no felling, no concrete, no soil disturbance.
The result is attractive content for visitors and an untouched natural ambience on Mount Mahnjača. For Žepče and the wider area of ZDK, it is an example of how small associations can make a big difference through carefully designed projects rooted in volunteer work and respect for nature.
