PSD Poštar Zenica developed adrenaline facilities at the Jedinci mountain lodge on Hum
Grantee:Mountaineering Sports Society Poštar, Zenica
Who stood behind the project - the long-standing Jedinci lodge
PSD "Poštar" Zenica is an organisation with a long-standing tradition of work. On the slopes of Mount Hum, above the village of Sopotnica in the Municipality of Kakanj, it ran the "Jedinci" mountain lodge, a facility that already had developed infrastructure:
- 10 rooms with 50 beds
- A kitchen with all necessary elements (electric stove, solid-fuel stove, fridge, sink, dishwasher)
- A large hall with capacity for over 50 guests
- Central heating
- Outdoor gazebos and tables
- Several mountain trails of different difficulty levels in the immediate vicinity
PSD Poštar with its own funds and donations from friends of the society repaired the access road to the lodge, so that ordinary cars could reach the lodge itself. This "small" intervention was a major precondition for what followed: the development of content that attracts new types of visitors.
Two facilities - adrenaline park and climbing wall
Adrenaline park for children and zipline
- An adrenaline park for children - open sports facilities in a forest setting, 10 metres from the lodge
- A zipline - contemporary adrenaline content that is indispensable in an active tourist offer
- Target audience: children of lodge visitors, school groups, families
Climbing wall for sport and recreational climbing
- An artificial climbing wall - a contemporary discipline combining recreation, training, and safety technique
- Intended for both children and adults - it expanded the target audience of the first facility
- Installed 10 to 15 metres from the lodge, in a natural forest setting
Why this type of content
The PSD Poštar application openly explained the strategic approach: across the whole of ZDK there were very few locations that, in a natural and forest ambiance, combined with a mountain lodge including all its indoor and outdoor facilities, could offer such content for children.
In other words: no one in ZDK had a complete package - a lodge, adrenaline content, a climbing wall, mountain trails. PSD "Poštar" built one of the first such locations, and did so smartly, in phases across several applications.
Readiness - expert support from a specialised company
Both projects had the same professional characteristics:
- Specifications and cost estimates were prepared by a company specialised in designing and building adrenaline parks, ziplines, and climbing walls
- Property-legal relations were fully resolved - PSD Poštar owned the land (forest) on which the construction took place
- A building permit was not required; according to the Law on Spatial Planning and Construction of ZDK, such facilities were exempt from the obligation to obtain a construction permit
Administrative obstacles were completely removed; the projects were carried out as soon as funds were available.
Ambient advantage of the location
One detail that set "Jedinci" apart from other places: dense coniferous and deciduous forest in the immediate vicinity of the lodge. That meant:
- Children were protected from the sun during the summer period, activities could take place even in the heart of summer
- The visual ambient was authentically mountaineering, not "produced" for tourism
- Natural acoustic conditions favoured the stay - there was no city noise or traffic corridors
Sustainability
Both facilities were outdoor additions to the existing lodge which had:
- A stable operational model with long-standing continuity
- Ownership position - the land was owned by PSD, there was no risk
- Basic infrastructure - kitchen, halls, central heating, outdoor gazebos
- An accessible road repaired with the society's own funds
- Several mountain trails nearby
Each new facility - adrenaline park, zipline, climbing wall - was not a standalone attraction but a supplement to the existing package. A visitor came for mountaineering and staying at the lodge, and got additional active content that kept them longer.
The message of the project
PSD "Poštar" Zenica did not compete with large adrenaline destinations in BiH. It did something smarter: it used its existing mountain lodge as a foundation and in phases supplemented it with content that other mountaineers have to seek at several different locations.
The result was an integrated offer - lodge, accommodation, mountaineering, adrenaline park, zipline, climbing wall, all at one location in an immediate forest setting. For visitors from ZDK and the wider BiH, that was a reason to, instead of travelling to several different places, spend a whole weekend or several days at "Jedinci".
