Tajan Mountaineering Society built the first mountain lodge in Zavidovići area

A society with long-standing tradition, a lodge for the whole tourist story

The Mountaineering Society "Tajan" is one of the oldest mountaineering societies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with decades of active work in the Zavidovići area. The society renewed its activity after a longer period and has since worked on one goal that will affect the entire tourist picture of Zavidovići and surroundings: the construction of the "Mašica" mountain lodge.

Why was that project so important? In the area under the management of the City of Zavidovići there was at the time no mountain lodge. And the area is rich in tourist potential:

• Tajan Nature Monument - a protected natural unit
• Lake Mašica - the point after which the lodge is named
• The cave in Srednja stijena - a natural and educational site
• The mountains Bakoš and Tvrtkovac - mountaineering routes
• A golf course nearby

Visitors to these sites at the time had nowhere to stay overnight or have an organised stop after arriving at the area. The "Mašica" lodge filled precisely that gap.

What the lodge looks like - three floors, each with its function

The "Mašica" mountain lodge was built with a strictly functional layout:

• Basement (about 40 m² + 40 m² terrace) - accommodation for the caretaker and guests until the lodge is built in full capacity
• Ground floor (about 80 m² + about 40 m² terrace) - day room, sanitary facilities, kitchenette for visitors
• Attic (about 80 m²) - three sleeping rooms and two sanitary units

In total, the lodge's capacity was sufficient to receive whole mountaineering groups, school excursions, and organised trips.

How it was built - phase by phase

Construction proceeded systematically across several phases, each applied for separately through public calls:

• Preparation - foundation works and site preparation
• Basement - basic construction works and completion of the first floor
• Roof structure - completion of the structural shell, roof slab, and roof

Such an approach divided costs across several budget cycles and made construction feasible for a society with modest income. This was not a shortcut, but a real indicator of how the society plans for the long term, not just when an approval passes.

The lodge as a starting point - not a final one

The "Mašica" lodge was not only a place of accommodation. It was conceived as a starting and ending point of mountaineering routes across the whole surrounding area:

• Departure in morning hours towards the Tajan Nature Monument or the Bakoš and Tvrtkovac mountains
• A visit to the cave in Srednja stijena - an educational and natural element
• A stay by Lake Mašica - recreation and rest
• Return to the lodge in the evening, overnight stay for the next trips

In that way, the lodge was not a destination in itself, but an infrastructural hub that opened the whole Tajan-Bakoš-Mašica area for organised mountaineering tourism.

Use according to the FBiH Mountaineering Association standard

One concrete detail from the project spoke to the seriousness of the approach: the lodge, like all mountain lodges, offered accommodation and a short stay according to the house rules of mountaineering facilities of the FBiH Mountaineering Association.

This meant the rules of use were not improvised, but "Mašica" joined the network of mountain lodges in FBiH, with a standardised way of reserving, staying, and paying. For guests, especially from other cantons and abroad, this was a predictable and familiar practice.

Sustainability - three pillars

Ownership position

• The plot on which the lodge was built was owned by the Tajan Mountaineering Society
• There were no disputes over the land or dependence on transfers or temporary permits
• The lodge was built permanently and remained in the society's hands

Protected area context

• The lodge was near the Tajan Nature Monument and other protected sites
• This was not accidental, it was a deliberate strategy
• The Nature Monument brought the visits on which the lodge's operation was built

Active local community

• Numerous visitors passing by the construction site stopped, took interest, and joined the activities
• This was organic community support, not advertising
• A daily indicator that the project resonated with its surroundings

What the lodge brought to Zavidovići and ZDK

• The first mountain lodge in the Zavidovići area - filling an empty niche
• A network connection with the FBiH Mountaineering Association - joining the regional and national lodge network
• Opening of protected sites for organised mountaineering tourism
• New possibilities for school trips and "Schools in Nature" to the Tajan area
• Tourist economic activity in local villages in the surroundings

The message of the project

Some projects come as ideas. This one came as a long-term, systematic plan realised gradually. A society with long-standing tradition, on its own plot, built something that the community and tourists had been seeking for a long time. This was not a project waiting for chance, this was a project that overcame numerous obstacles through persistence and gradual construction.

Each phase applied for separately spoke to the financial reality of an association with modest income and to the seriousness of the approach. When "Mašica" is completed, Zavidovići will have its first mountain lodge, and the Tajan Mountaineering Society will continue doing what it has been doing for decades: connecting people with nature.
